Thank you!!! Your answer was so thorough and helpful! We’ll sleep better tonight knowing Sweetie Pie may NOT have a horrible infection or cancer!

I can't believe that Dr. Beall actually phoned me to discuss my dog's condition! This was way above the call of duty! Thanks so much for your time and advice, and I will get back to you after my dog has the tests done that you requested!

Question: We have a 45-50 lb mixed breed dog...about 1 1/2 years old. For the past two weeks or so she has developed the sniffles. After she's been sleeping and she gets up...she sneezes like crazy and sniffles. She doesn't do it constantly, normally just after she's been still for a long period of time. She doesn't act like she feels bad...she still plays and eats like she normally would. Her nose is cold and she doesn't seem to be running a fever. It seems like she has developed an allergy to something. We haven't changed anything in the house so we're thinking it's something outside. I know she can have benadryl...what is the dosage for dogs? I would like to try that and see if it helps any before I spend a ton of money at the vet. I have another question too, but I'll ask that separately. Thanks for your help...Lisa Culpepepr

Question: It's Lisa Culpepper again, same 45-50 lb mixed breed dog...1 1/2 years old. Her anal glands!!!! They seem to get clogged up all the time. It used to be once a month or once every two months that we would have to take her to the vet to get them squeezed and cleaned out. Now it seems like we are taking her every couple of weeks. Is there anything we can do other than getting them squeezed at the vet??? Anything we can add to her diet that might help this issue...any medication that might help??? Help!! she stinks!! Thanks again...Lisa Culpepper

Question: This summer, my husband and I will be traveling all over the upper mid west with our dog. Are there any tips for camping with pets that will help us insure that our dog doesn't get into any trouble?

Question: I have a 10 yr. old male cat, "Tiger Toes”. He has battled itching and skin problems for years now. We put him on ZD diet about 6 months ago and he seemed to do better for a while. But now is back to the itching like mad. He does live with other cats in an enclosure, but is fed separately and then put back in. There is a remote possibility that he can occasionally sneak a piece of their dry (Purina One, Urinary Tract Food). He was diagnosed with pancreaitis several months ago and was given medication for that. I took him in last week for a recurring ear infection and he was given a steroid shot for his skin along with Tresaderm for his ears. I asked about allergy testing and my vet explained the procedures to me and said sometimes it takes up to two years to see results from the continuous allergy injections. He suggested that if this shot seemed to work after a week, that we put him on a very low dose of oral steroids to help stop the itching. He does seem to be much better this week. At this point, I just want him to be as comfortable as possible. Do you think the oral steroids are a good idea at his age? I would do the allergy testing and shots, but think at his advanced age, it just might not work quickly enough.

Question: Last year you mentioned some great tips in the newsletter about holiday foods that can cause problems for pets, are there holiday plants that can cause problems too? ex. ponssetias, christmas cactus, african violets?

Question: Hi Dr. Beall, Separate from this message, I've e-mailed photos of Sebastian -- a 4-year-old Golden Retriever. Sebastian has always had a habit of chewing on a single spot on his leg -- until there is a large, raw sore. The behavior comes and goes -- but never goes away entirely. For several days now he's been at it again. Prednisone, allergies, changes in food have all been tried in the past -- none have impacted the behavior. I have also sent photos of some other skin irritations he seems to have; and photos of his front right paw which is deformed. Hope you can us figure out why he is chewing on himself so much. Thank you! Erin

Question: I have a couple of questions: 1. My dog Maggie was treated by the vet about a month ago for demodex mites. In order to fully get rid of them we had to put her on Ivomec once a day for 30 days. I gave her .5cc everyday and she did great. The mites went away and everything was perfect. It's been about a month since I've stopped the Ivomec and I think she is getting the mites again. I see one spot on her back leg where she is losing hair. And, she is shedding like crazy. Way more than normal. She shed like this before the mites went into overdrive the last time. When she was on the Ivomec everyday her shedding was minimal to none, her skin and coat were beautiful and she showed no adverse effects of the meds. My question is can I keep her on the Ivomec on a daily basis? Can I give it to her 2-3 times per week even? Are the longterm effects of her being on it? Please help...I will ask my other question seperately. Thanks so much, Lisa Culpepper and Maggie

Question: Here is my 2nd question regarding Maggie: She was spayed in July. Recently about once or twice a week when we're getting ready to settle down for the evening she secretes or leaks something. It's not urine and it's not poop. It smells funny, like a hormone or something. What could it be? Does it have anything to do with her being spayed or did something go wrong with the procedure? Please help. Thanks so much, Lisa Culpepper and Maggie

Question: I have been reading a lot of articles on vitins for dogs, that help with nutrition and antioxidants. She eats a dog food brand diet from the vet (same brand you sell), doesn't this have her covered? Do you recommend vitamins for young dogs? Are there preventative meds for nutrition that have some merit?

Question: Hi Dr. Beall! At sometime during the past few days, the tip of one of Simon's front "fangs" broke off! It's jagged now, but I don't believe the nerve is exposed. A few questions: 1) Should we have the tooth filed or smoothed somehow -- or will it smooth out on its own? 2) What could have caused this broken tooth? He's not an old cat -- is this normal at his age? 3) Simon seems bothered a lot by his gums -- for as long as we can remember, he constantly rubs at them and they bleed sometimes. We try to brush his teeth/gums once in while, but it's tough to do. Do you think he is having more serious dental problems -- and is there something else we should be doing? We'd hate to see him start losing his teeth! Thanks! Erin
